Odanasva Yaga

As narrated by a devotee

Narratives of Experiences with Maha Periyaval - Volume 1
Translated by: Sujatha Vijayaraghavan

Everyone has the right to chant the mantra in the odanasva yaga.

This yaga is performed when there is shortage of food in the world. It causes a bountiful harvest. When this yaga reaches its conclusion, all the people assembled there must chant together the mantra that is a prayer for agricultural plenitude. In the Taittiriya Brahmana (II.7) it is said that all people, irrespective of differences should chant this mantra. We learnt this from Periyava in a large conference of scholars.

Periyaval: Is there any mantra that can be chanted by everybody?

The scholars were taken aback.

Periyaval: The one who is worthy of food is the one who is hungry. No other worthiness is recognized here, except hunger. So, to overcome scarcity of food, which afflicts people everywhere, this prayer should be chanted by everyone collectively in this yaga.

Periyaval then quoted the mantra.

"sarve purusa: sarvanyevan nanya va runde | sarvan purusan |"

We were taken aback by his omniscience.
