Handy hints

Apply Soda bicarbonate paste  to remove  tea and turmeric stains from glasses and crockery, allow it to stay for 15 to 20 minutes and wash the utensil under running water.
Do not discard the old tooth brushes away, they are handy in cleaning the nook and corners which the bigger ones cannot do. 

You can clean the keyboard, piano, harmonium keys, DVD head, the tape buttons ,window pane gaps, sliding door gaps, sliding window panes, combs, cooker lid nostrils, whistles, corners and nooks of doors and window, cupboards, almirah hinges, bottle necks, lids, chairs and sofa corners, mobile button gaps, cot- bed corners ,wash basin. western closets.

A new brush can be bought to clean the God and Goddess's bronze, silver idols. 

Dip the ear bud in Glycerine and rub the last bit of candle wax droppings from the candle sticks after peeling of the wax .

Earbuds dipped in Glycerine can be used for applying on teeth for small kids to relieve them from pain. 

 Use ear buds  to clean the nostrils of small kids,to clean the key board gaps, for painting rangolis, applying fevicol, gum.

 But remember to go for the branded ones not the cheaper ones. 

Use ear buds to remove any extra nail polish smudged  along the corner of nails  with the nail polish remover and the smudges on the lips after applying the  lipstick.


Use tooth brush  just a dab of paste  to clean the gold and silver ornaments either keeping them in a bowl of soap water or directly in the wash basin but remember to PLACE a turkey towel in the basin before washing them so that the smaller ones do not drain off.   But do not apply toothpaste to pearls as the grit will remove the shiny finish.

A   chalkboard eraser  removes the  windows'  fog.  Better than using a cloth!

In rainy season and in winter place some chalk pieces in the almirahs, cupboards to  absorb moisture . Use  it to write the date on the cylinder from when you started using it. 

Oil the hinges once a month, tighten the screws of cooker lid, , tawa handles, locks and the door latches .Olive oil does wonders than the common machine oil.Once  a month check the door locks and bolts whether they need tightening of screws.

Clean the chimney meshes once in fifteen days with kerosene . 

 Make a thick paste of oatmeal and water scrub your dirty hands and rinse well.

Slice and rub raw potato on the stains and rinse with water. Alternatively  you can wash your hands with buttermilk or curd to get rid of the kerosene, paint smell.

 Tooth paste will take out the strong odoriferous food smell from your hands so rub some  paste and rinse thoroughly.  

Take some raw rice and mix with water to clean the inside of a vase or a thin-necked bottle. 

 Clean the  rusty 
garden tools with black tea.  Pour the cooled  tea  into a bucket. Soak the tools for a few hours. Wipe each one with a cloth. (Remember to  wear rubber gloves to prevent  hands from  staining .)

 To remove the grease  stained  carpet, pour  some cornstarch on the spots and leave  it aside for 15 to 30 minutes and then  vacuum clean it.

To remove  the permanent-marker stains from finished 
wood floors or use  some alcohol on it and rub .

Remove auto scratches by rubbing a dab of tooth paste  o a sponge and rub gently in clockwise direction . Then pat dry with a soft cloth.  Can be done for mirrors and  car headlights. 

Rub gently on your goggles to remove the scratches and rinse thoroughly. Same can be done to remove scratches from DVDs and CDs , use a cotton cloth to buff.

Use sponge or old socks to wipe the mirror, glassware, table tops, shelf, windows, shoes, leather items, bags ,suitcases, fridge, sofas, TV ,PC  monitors, switch boards, fan blades, door window grills, car glass windows non stick kadai, tawas  etc.,

Use white bread to dust an oil painting! Gently dab a slice of white bread over the surface to pick up dirt and grime.

  Use tomato ketchup  to remove tarnish from copper and brass cookware. Rinse with warm water and dry .
