Periods of Ashoucham

The prescribed periods are as follows:-

10 full days

Gnaathis, i.e. (a sapindars, and (b) samanodhars.

Father
Grandfather
Great-grandfather
Son
Grandson
Great-grandson

3 full days 

Mother's father
Mother's mother
Mother's brother and his wife
Mother-in-law
Mother's sisters
Father's sisters
Son's son who had Upanayanam done
Daughter's son who had Upanayanam done
Married daughter
Married sister
Other male relatives beyond 7 generations who had Upanayanam done
Mother of boy given for adoption into another gothram
Father of boy given for adoption into another gothram

Note:  Married women follow their husbands in observing the above.  In addition, they also observe 3 days ashoucham
for:-

Brother who had Upanayanam done
Nephew who had Upanayanam done
Sister's son who had Upanayanam done
Mother's sisters

One and half days (2 nights and intervening day)

Children of father' son
Children of mother's brother
Children of mother's sister
Sister's daughter
Brother's married daughter
Father's sister's daughter
Son's daughter
Daughter's daughter
Daughter's son who has not had Upanayanam done
Sister's son who has not had Upanayanam done

(for women, additionally)

Note:-

If news of death meriting 10 days' ashoucham is heard after 10 days but within 3 months, then observe 3 days ashoucham

If heard after 3 but within 6 months, then observe one and a half days ashoucham

If heard after that but within a year, then observe one day ashoucham
After that, no ashoucham, only take a bath.

If news of death meriting 3 days' ashoucham is heard after 3 days but within 10 days, then observe one and a half days ashoucham

After that, no ashoucham, only take a bath.

If news of death meriting one and a half days' ashoucham is heard after one and a half days but within 10 days, then observe one day's ashoucham, i.e. same day as heard, or same night as heard

After that, no ashoucham, only take a bath.

If news of death meriting one day ashoucham is heard after 10 days, then no ashoucham, only take a bath.

Should parent's death becomes known to the eldest son, or husband's death becomes known to wife, at any time, then immediately there starts 10 days ashoucham.

Note:-  Normally, the period of ashoucham, if 10 or 3 days, starts on the day after hearing of the death.
